Road User Charging was always a dead end.

congestion charge30th June 2009

A speech by the Transport Minister, Lord Adonis, to switch away from road charging has been welcomed by Warley MP John Spellar.

Mr Spellar, a previous Transport Minister, had campaigned strongly against charging schemes, particularly when there were proposals for the West Midlands.

 John Spellar MP said:-

“Road User Charging was always a dead end.  It should now be decently buried.  The Minister is quite right to focus on hard shoulder running which provides huge cost effective benefits.   He should also look at junction improvements.  In towns he should shake his officials out of their lethargy and implement the Street Works Legislation.  All of this will be better than another tax on hard pressed motorists.”

Promoted by Ray Collins, General Secretary, the Labour Party, on behalf of the Labour Party, both at 39 Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0HA.
